Hourly wage in administration in 2026
In 2026, the average hourly wage of a working student in Belgium is 14.21 euros gross, according to social secretariat Securex. What you earn exactly depends on your age and on the joint committee the company falls under. Office work usually falls under the auxiliary joint committee for white-collar workers, which has fixed pay scales that are indexed every year.
Under 21? Your pay scale is usually lower. You always see the exact amount in your student employment contract before you sign.
On top of that:
- Supplements. If you work on Saturday, Sunday or outside regular office hours, the joint committee's supplements apply.
- Travel. A contribution towards your commuting costs is mandatory in most sectors, for working students too. Are your commuting costs reimbursed?
- Holiday pay. You build it up over the hours you work, and it is included in the calculation.

Why administration is the smartest student job
Most student jobs ask a lot of your body. This one asks for your brain, and that's exactly why it combines so well with your studies. You work indoors, you know on Monday which hours you'll work that week, and you come home without needing two hours to recover. If you study economics, law, communication or languages, it's also a direct extension of your classes. And you learn things that stick: how a file really fits together, how to write an email a customer understands, and how a company works from the inside.
Fixed hours
Office hours are predictable, so you plan your classes and exam study around them.
Working indoors
No weather, no night shifts, no eight hours on your feet.
CV value
Administrative experience counts for almost every internship and first job.
Office software
You use the programs every day that employers will ask about later.
Growth
Many students stay with the same client after graduating, this time on a permanent contract.
Easy to combine
One day a week works, two days too, and during the holidays you step it up.
What do you do as an administrative assistant?
You're the person who makes sure the data is correct and nothing gets left behind. That sounds small, but a company where invoicing falls behind or nobody answers the phone grinds to a halt within a week. You get a clearly defined task, a colleague who shows you the ropes, and you build from there.
- Processing data. Entering and checking orders, invoices, timesheets and customer details.
- Email and phone. Answering customer questions or passing them on to the right colleague.
- Keeping files in order. Filing, digitising and completing documents until a file is complete.
- Support. Helping an accounting team or planning department during a busy period or an absence.
A shift usually lasts four to eight hours, and in most cases you agree on fixed days rather than loose hours.

Frequently asked questions about an administrative student job
Do I need experience for administrative work?
No. For most administrative student jobs, it's enough that you work accurately and are comfortable with a computer. The client trains you on the system they use.
How many hours can I work as a student?
Since 2025, you can work 650 hours per calendar year at the reduced solidarity contribution of 8.13 percent, according to the NSSO. You keep track of your balance yourself on Student@work. How many hours can you work in 2026?
What happens if I go over 650 hours?
You only pay the regular contributions of 13.07 percent on the hours above 650. Your whole contract isn't recalculated, only the part above the quota.
From what age can I start working?
From age 15 for light, non-industrial work, as set out in the Royal Decree of 19 April 2026. Administrative work usually falls under this.
Do I remain a tax dependant of my parents?
That depends on your net means of subsistence over the whole year. For income year 2026, a bracket of 7,010 euros of your student wages is exempt in that calculation. Work it out with your parents before you take on extra hours.
What does this mean for my family allowance?
Between 18 and 25, you keep your family allowance (Groeipakket in Flanders) if you stay within the 650 hours on a student contract. Under 18, your hours play no role.
Can administrative work be done from home?
Sometimes, but usually not for working students. Training happens at the office, and many administrative systems are only accessible on site for security reasons. If a vacancy includes remote work, we mention it explicitly.
Can this lead to a permanent job?
Yes, and it happens often. A client who already knows you would rather hire you than start searching again. Your time as a working student then becomes one long introduction. Always check your student employment contract before you sign.
