Student technical jobs in Belgium

Work where your course of study counts. In the workshop, at the technical service or on the bikes, with the rules for young workers properly arranged.

  • Your course of study counts
  • Risk assessment arranged in advance
  • Work that follows on from your training

What this work gives you

Here your course of study decides what you may do

In most student jobs, any field of study works. In technical work your field matters, and for more than employer preference. The law attaches rights to it: part of the work is allowed only if your course of study matches that activity.

That is why we always ask about your training for a technical assignment. The aim: a workstation where you are legally allowed to be and where you learn something that belongs to your field.

Good to know

Pay, hours and the 2026 rules

What do you earn in a technical student job?

In technical roles your pay follows the scale of your employer’s joint committee and the job level. If you are studying for a technical degree or industrial sciences, you move sooner into measuring and inspection work, which is graded higher.

How many hours can you work while keeping the benefit?

Since the Act of 10 April 2025 you may work 650 hours per calendar year on a student employment contract, and that quota is permanent, according to the NSSO. On those hours you and your employer together pay a solidarity contribution of 8.13%, of which 2.71% is yours. Beyond 650 hours, the ordinary contributions of 13.07% apply from the 651st hour, on those extra hours only. Your counter is on Student@work.

Which work may young people not do?

Young workers may not operate dangerous machinery or carry out dangerous work, such as driving excavators, using powder-actuated tools, or welding and cutting. Exposure to harmful or toxic substances, ionising radiation, extreme heat or cold, noise and vibration is not allowed either.

And the exception to that?

You may still carry out that work when four conditions are met together: you are over 18, you do not drive motorised transport equipment, you follow a course of study matching the activity, and the committee for prevention and protection at work and the prevention advisers have given their opinion.

For employers

Hiring technical students?

You free up hours for your experienced technicians by handing preparation, assembly, materials and admin to student workers. We arrange the contract, Dimona, payroll, risk assessment and health surveillance in a single file.

  • We screen on course of study, because it partly determines what a student may legally do
  • The risk assessment for young workers and the health assessment under 18 run through us
  • A technical student who stays two years becomes your own talent pool
  • Take that student on permanently later

Frequently asked questions

About a technical student job

For workshop support and materials management, no. For repair and inspection work we do look at your course of study.

Yes. Every young worker under 18 must have a health assessment beforehand, as must anyone doing night work. Your employer arranges that for you.

650 hours per calendar year at the solidarity contribution of 8.13%, according to the NSSO. Your counter is on Student@work.

Yes, your employer supplies them. A risk assessment for young workers must also be in place before you start, and it is renewed every year.

A student job differs from an internship, but the work often ties in with one. Students who stay two years with the same employer regularly end up there permanently after graduating.
