Student jobs by sector
Fixed hours outside your timetable, close to home, and pay tied to the role rather than to your age.
What this work gives you
That is exactly the problem with most student jobs: they want you during the day, when you are in class. Cleaning works differently. Offices are cleaned early in the morning or after closing time, which happens to be when you are free.
The second advantage is the schedule itself. A cleaning assignment usually runs on fixed days at fixed hours, week after week. So you know months ahead when you work, and you can plan your exam period around it.
Good to know
In cleaning, the sector scale of joint committee 121 applies: your pay depends on the job category and not on your age, and it is indexed twice a year, on 1 January and 1 July. A sixteen-year-old doing the same work as a twenty-two-year-old therefore earns the same.
Since the Act of 10 April 2025 you may work 650 hours per calendar year on a student employment contract, and that quota is permanent, according to the NSSO. On those hours you and your employer together pay a solidarity contribution of 8.13%, of which 2.71% is yours. Beyond 650 hours, the ordinary contributions of 13.07% apply from the 651st hour, on those extra hours only. Your counter is on Student@work.
You remain a dependant as long as your net means stay below 12,300 euros, a uniform amount for income year 2025. On top of that, a band of 7,010 euros of your student pay does not count for income year 2026. Child benefit, however, is a regional matter and the rules differ: the Groeipakket in Flanders (groeipakket.be), Iriscare in Brussels (iriscare.brussels) and AViQ in Wallonia (aviq.be). Check the conditions with the body for your own region, because they differ from region to region.
Since the Royal Decree of 19 April 2026, published in the Belgian Official Gazette on 4 May 2026, you may work as a student worker from the age of 15 on light, non-industrial tasks. Office cleaning falls under that; industrial cleaning does not.

No. You get instructions on site and work alongside a colleague for the first few days.
That depends on the place. Offices are usually cleaned early in the morning or after closing time. In holiday homes and holiday parks you work during the day on fixed changeover days, between one group of guests leaving and the next arriving. That way you combine it with your classes.

Usually not. When placing you we take your home address and public transport into account. For holiday parks further away, you often travel to the site with a student driver.
