What this work gives you

Being bilingual is a real asset here

In Belgium almost every customer line faces the same question: who takes the French-language calls? If you speak Dutch and French, and English on top, you are exactly the profile an employer in this sector spends weeks looking for.

You notice it in the shifts too. Customer contact peaks on Monday morning, during a promotion and at weekends, which are exactly the moments when the regular team is too small. So you can choose when you work instead of taking what is left.

Good to know

Pay, hours and the 2026 rules

What do you earn in a customer service student job?

At Recruit a Student you currently earn 13.33 to 13.66 euros an hour in customer service, in the vacancies that are open. In customer service your pay follows the scale of your employer’s joint committee, and evening, weekend and public holiday shifts earn supplements. A bilingual line often pays more than a single-language one.

How many hours can you work while keeping the benefit?

Since the Act of 10 April 2025 you may work 650 hours per calendar year on a student employment contract, and that quota is permanent, according to the NSSO. On those hours you and your employer together pay a solidarity contribution of 8.13%, of which 2.71% is yours. Beyond 650 hours, the ordinary contributions of 13.07% apply from the 651st hour, on those extra hours only. Your counter is on Student@work.

Which languages do you need?

For a Dutch-language line, Dutch is enough. Most assignments in and around Brussels ask for French, and sometimes English as well. We test your language skills before placing you, so you end up on a line where you feel comfortable.

From what age may you work in customer service?

Since the Royal Decree of 19 April 2026, published in the Belgian Official Gazette on 4 May 2026, you may work as a student worker from the age of 15 on light, non-industrial tasks. Reception, front desk and telephone customer service fall under that.

Frequently asked questions

About a student job in customer service

No. You get an induction with your employer’s scripts and systems, and you start on the first line with a colleague beside you.

Customer contact peaks in the morning, in the early evening and at weekends. That makes it easy to combine with classes.

650 hours per calendar year at the solidarity contribution of 8.13%, according to the NSSO. Your counter is on Student@work.

That differs per assignment. Reception and check-in are always on site; phone and chat work usually happens at the office, because that is where your employer’s systems are.

Sometimes. You are shown how, and you escalate anything you cannot resolve on the first line. You always have support.
