For students

Cleaning as a student job in Belgium

A cleaning student job in Belgium runs at fixed times that fit around your classes: early in the morning or after office hours in offices, and during the day on changeover day in holiday homes and holiday parks.

In short

You give every place a fresh start. Early in the morning you get an office ready for the working day, and on changeover day you prepare a holiday home for new guests. You work to a fixed rhythm that comes back every week, so you can easily plan your classes around it. Beginners get instructions on site. Signing up is free and takes one minute.

Why cleaning

Why cleaning works so well for students

Cleaning follows a fixed rhythm. An office is cleaned at the same times every week and a holiday park changes guests on fixed days. That gives you a schedule that comes back week after week, so you can easily plan your classes, your hobbies and your exam period around it.

The hours themselves are well placed. Offices are cleaned before the working day starts or after office hours, at times when you are free. At a holiday park you work during the day on changeover day, ideal for a day off from class or during your holidays.

And extra hands are in demand. In Flanders, cleaning occupations such as domestic cleaner and window cleaner are on the VDAB list of shortage occupations for 2026.

The work

What does a student cleaner do?

What you do depends on the place. Each vacancy lists the tasks, the working hours and what you earn per hour.

Offices and meeting rooms

You get desks, meeting rooms, the kitchen and the sanitary facilities in order. That happens early in the morning or after office hours, so the staff start the next day in a fresh workplace.

Holiday homes and holiday parks

On changeover day you get the cottages ready for the next guests: you make the beds, vacuum and mop, and clean the bathroom and the kitchen. You work during the day, often together with other students. For parks further away, you often travel with a student driver.

Stairwells and communal areas

You keep entrance halls, stairs and corridors clean, so residents and visitors find a well-kept entrance every day.

Schools and public buildings

You clean classrooms, corridors and canteens outside teaching hours. After an event or at a handover, you help with the big clean-up.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about a cleaning student job

Your hourly rate is always shown in each vacancy and in your student contract. For comparison: in 2026 a student worker in Belgium earned an average of 14.21 euros gross per hour, according to Securex.

In 2026 you may work up to 650 hours per calendar year on a student contract at a reduced solidarity contribution, according to the NSSO. Those hours count for all your student jobs together. You can follow your counter on Student@work.

A solidarity contribution of 8.13% applies to your student pay: you pay 2.71% and the employer pays 5.42%. So you keep more of a student hour than of an ordinary working hour.

The hours above 650 are subject to the ordinary contributions of 13.07%, on those extra hours only. You may keep working and keep a little less per extra hour.

That depends on your net means. For income year 2025 the limit is 12,300 euros, the same for every household type. On top of that, a band of 7,010 euros of your student pay stays out of the calculation for income year 2026.

Child benefit is a regional matter and the rules differ: the Groeipakket in Flanders, Iriscare in Brussels and AViQ in Wallonia. Check the conditions with the body for your own region.

From the age of 15 you may do light, non-industrial work as a student worker, under the Royal Decree of 19 April 2026. Office cleaning falls under that.

Beginners are welcome. On site you get instructions and you work alongside a colleague for the first few days. What we ask: that you are on time and that you pass on changes in good time.

Yes. You work outside your class hours and you submit your own availability in the Poolmanager app. So during your exam period you decide how much you work.
